Why Ray Trace is Not Good Enough – Air Force Weapons Lab publication
Ray trace approximations are adequate for solid object geometries. But in the real world, space systems are full of voids. Ray trace, when used on shell geometries that approximate the voids, yields errors of a factor of ten. The solution is ADJOINT MONTE CARLO analysis, providing precision instead of approximation.
